Copenhagen

"Like a fairy tale come to life" - that is the first impression most visitors have of Copenhagen.

While the other Scandinavian countries generally conjure up impressions of a cold climate and a slightly insular atmosphere, Denmark, the gateway to the north, does not match the stereotype. While in Copenhagen, you may be surprised to find yourself in a sophisticated city with a real appreciation for beauty and art and an attitude that embraces variety.

On a visit to Copenhagen, expect to immerse yourself in culture, culture and more culture. As home of one of the oldest ruling monarchies, the city features the daily spectacle of the royal guards in full ceremonial dress, marching from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg for the changing of the guard at noon.

A number of statues beautify Copenhagen. Most famous of these is the Little Mermaid, but her creator, Hans Christian Andersen is himself immortalized in stone. Notable rulers such as Bishop Absalan, Frederik VII and Christian IV feature, but Biblical figures such as Moses, Bartholomew and King David, and characters from myth ranging from Leda and the Swan, Athena and Marsyas, an anonymous Valkyrie and an equestrian Diana.

The Nyhavn canal area provides a colorful backdrop by day and by night.
